Our Story

Buckitt was founded by Rae Jones in 2013 after a successful Kickstarter campaign with a finishing total of 127% funding. Our studio is in East London and our bags are made down the road in Whitechapel. We are committed to British manufacture.

The Buckitt bag will prove to be a heritage piece that one day could be passed down, and have plenty of stories to tell – being made of the finest, most durable Italian, vegetable dyed leather hides not only ensures minimal environmental impact but that it will only get better looking with age. The Buckitt bag is designed to be reconditioned and worn parts can be replaced if required. To find out more about our leather and how to care for your Buckitt please click  here.

Jones spent recent years working as a fashion trends analyst and building a loyal following for her own-label women’s footwear.   She was encouraged to design the Buckitt bag after becoming increasingly disillusioned by the sight of otherwise stylish women using grubby canvas totes, and even supermarket plastic bags, to carry their belongings, keeping their leather handbags for best.

Buckitt is her answer – blending functionality into something simple and elegant. It’s a beautiful, durable bag that is practical enough for everyday use and smart enough for any situation; large enough to fit a laptop, or even the groceries, yet still lightweight; with a detachable long leather strap so that it can be worn cross body for cycling; and with an internal pocket to allow you to easily find your purse or keys. About Rae Jones:

Rae Jones VLeathergoods and textile designer Rae Jones has built a loyal following for her own-label women’s footwear. After five years designing slick yet eclectic footwear, and with nearly a decade’s experience forecasting key trends for the international fashion footwear industry, Jones felt it was time to use that extensive insight to create Buckitt her own accessories brand.

In 2013 Jones began collaborating with a run-down British factory to design and make a new kind of leather women’s bag under her Buckitt label – smart enough to be upmarket, tough enough to carry the groceries.

Jones designs are inspired by classic British design. She is passionate about creating what is often lacking in the accessories market – designs that blend functionality into something simple and elegant.

“I designed this bag as I so often see otherwise stylish friends carrying their worldly goods and laptops in any old scruffy bags and I wanted to create something beautiful and hardwearing for them to use every day. Something that will get better with age and which they will be proud of for years to come.”

Quality materials and choice of colour are intrinsic to Rae Jones signature: Fine saddlery leathers are available in a core range of classic veg-tan shades from tan to deep red wine and traditional forest green to rich grey. The bag shows a nod to history in its colour palette and details but avoids easy pigeon-holing as vintage inspired.

Rae Jones graduated from Glasgow School of art in 2000 and went on to complete a postgraduate course in Footwear Design at the prestigious Cordwainers College, London. Following training in bespoke shoe-making, in 2001 she was appointed footwear and accessories editor to leading fashion forecasters WGSN, providing style predictions, trend research and analysis to global names in fashion footwear. She started her self-titled women’s footwear brand in 2008 and currently consults for the fashion industry.
